Florida Tax Collector to Accept Cryptos for Payments

May 15 2018

Joel Greenberg, the tax collector for Seminole County in Florida, has announced that his office will accept payments in both Bitcoin and Bitcoin cash for property tax, driver’s licenses, ID cards, automobile tags, and titles. This will be done through a partnership with BitPay, a blockchain payments company.

With the aid of BitPay, settlements can be directly received in the bank account on the next business day, Greenberg said. He further mentioned -

“We live in a world where technology has made access to services on demand, with same-day delivery and the expectation of highly efficient customer service and we should expect the same from our government. The aim of my tenure in office is to make our customer experience faster, smarter, and more efficient, and to bring government services from the 18th century into the 21st century and one way is the addition of cryptocurrency to our payment options.”

According to Bitpay, Seminole County is the first government agency to enlist their services. The County also expects to remove the risk of fraud and identity theft through this initiative.

This announcement by Greenberg also caused an upward moment for the largest cryptocurrency Bitcoin during the day.
